TOLLYCRAFT 44 CPMY STORY: On January 20, Tollycraft Yachts founder R.M. "Tolly" Tollefson celebrated his 90th birthday with members of the Tollycraft owners club, friends and admirers of his work.
For 50 years, Tollefson built one of the most popular lines of boats in the Pacific Northwest at his facility in Kelso, Washington. Each of his boats was created for real-life boaters who went out in real world conditions. The boats were practical, tough and seakindly enough to handle the roughest seas the Pacific could dish out.
Of all the boats Tollycraft produced, Tollefson once called the 44 Cockpit Motor Yacht his personal favorite. The boat, designed to Tollefson's specifications by renowned naval architect Ed Monk Jr., is still highly regarded as one of the most stylish Tollycrafts ever built and it is one of the most cruise able.
A Practical Design
Tollefson often said that every boat his company built was a vessel he had created for himself. For that reason, Tollycraft yachts are built to handle even the sloppiest offshore conditions.
Tollefson did not take kindly to the concept of using a boat as a condo or a dockside party barge. Tollefson lived to go boating, and he still enjoys long-range cruising to this day. Monk and his father before him took Tolly's original concept designs and engineered them into some of the West's most beloved cruising yachts.
Tollycraft's 44 Cockpit Motor Yacht is built on the Quadra Lift. Revered for its handling, performance and fuel efficiency, this hull makes for a dry ride and dampens roll.
Unlike a typical hard-chined hull, the Quadra Lift hull has a pair of chines with a compound curve in between. The top chine, above the waterline, deflects spray and bow wave for a dry ride. The two chines together keep the hull from plunging too deep in heavy seas, dampen roll action and strengthen the hull sides.
The boat is not only extraordinarily seakindly, it is fuel-efficient for its size. 375 hp Caterpillar Diesels also provide economical cruising performance.
Serious cruisers appreciate the fact that not only is the 44 an economical and practical boat with a long foredeck with a bow pulpit and rail-protected walk-around sidedecks. It is also an especially comfortable boat.
Standout features on the 44 include an aft sundeck with more than 130 square feet of space. Many buyers opted to cover it with an optional hardtop and surround it with a clear vinyl/canvas enclosure, to create the equivalent of a second saloon.
Abaft the sundeck and down one level, the 44's cockpit offers room for one angler and a convenient place to board from the swim step.
The 44's flybridge offers a full 360 degree view of the water, plus an L-shaped settee where guests can relax with the skipper. A lower helm station was also available as an option, for all-weather operation from inside the saloon. Big forward windows (available with triple wipers) and equally large side windows added practicality and made for a light and airy interior.
The 44's spacious saloon was available with either a straight or L-shaped settee and both converted to berths. A forward counter/breakfast bar separated the saloon from the galley, located a few steps down, to port.
Steps leading from the saloon to the U-shaped galley also served as an access to the engine room. A dinette with seating for four was positioned to starboard.
Forward, the 44's guest stateroom offered a V-berth with an insert to convert it to a double. It adjoined a head with a shower.
The master stateroom, located aft (beneath the sundeck), offered a walk-around queen-size berth, two hanging lockers, large side windows and aft portlights. It included a private head with its own stall shower.
Gone But Not Forgotten
The 44 disappeared in 1994. That year, the model was given a longer swim platform and was rechristened as the Tollycraft 45 Cockpit Motor Yacht. The interior layout was revamped in 1995, and the 45 was finally discontinued in 1996 â ? about the time Tollycraft Yachts itself began to fade away.
After Tollefson retired from Tollycraft in the 1980s, he cautioned the firm's new owners to go slow and make no wake. Unfortunately, they did not follow his advice. After rapid expansion of the company despite a large backlog of orders for new boats ... Tollycraft went under.
New management took over in 1996, but Tollycraft could not be saved. Boat building stopped completely by 1998.
Fortunately for lovers of Tollycraft yachts, some of these popular boats are being built today under other names.
For example, the OceanAire 36 Sport Sedan, built by Bellingham,Washington-based OceanAire Yachts, is constructed from the molds of the former Tollycraft 34, with the addition of a 2-foot hull extension. While it has been redesigned for today's boaters and offers the latest power and electronics options, this Ed Monk Jr. design is carrying the ocean-tested Quadra Lift hull into the 21st century.
As one of the last of the original Tollycrafts, the 44 was a very popular model this modern classic has held its value very well, indeed. On today's brokerage boat market, a well-maintained 44 Cockpit Motor Yacht typically sells in short order due to the overall quality and design.
Owners of these boats no doubt wish Tolly were still building these great, practical cruising yachts in the new millennium.
